LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

DeSaulnier Authors Bill to Provide Justice to Local Family
Pittsburg resident Danyelle Luckey selflessly and bravely signed up to serve her country, a decision that, due to flagrant medical malpractice aboard a Navy ship, cost her life. The pain the Luckey family has endured from the tragic loss of their daughter is unimaginable and exacerbated by the fact that a misinterpretation of the law has prevented them from pursuing justice. To right this wrong, Congressman DeSaulnier joined with local Congresswoman Jackie Speier to introduce the Seaman Danyelle Luckey Military Medical Accountability Amendment Act (H.R. 8831). We must pass this bill to ensure no other family experiences their same pain and to bring justice for Danyelle.

Congressman DeSaulnier Votes to Pass Good Governance Legislation
Congressman DeSaulnier voted last week for two bills that would keep government working on behalf of the American people and help rebuild trust. The Preventing a Patronage System Act (H.R. 302) and the Whistleblower Protection Improvement Act (H.R. 2988) passed the House by votes of 225-to-204 and 221-to-203, respectively. H.R. 302 would protect federal workers against unjust firing and H.R. 2988 would ensure that federal employees who have witnessed wrongdoing can share information with Congress without fear of retaliation.

Mark Supports Accurate Census Data Collection
During preparation for the 2020 Census, the Trump Administration improperly attempted to add a citizenship question to the survey, which could have led to an undercount of the Latino population. To protect against improper political influence at the Census Bureau, Congressman DeSaulnier supported House passage of the Ensuring a Fair and Accurate Census Act (H.R. 8326). This bill, which passed the House by a vote of 220-to-208, would limit the number of political appointees at the Census Bureau, maintain all operational control for the Census within the agency, and ensure that new survey questions are thoroughly studied before their addition to the Census.
