LEGISLATIVE UPDATES

Mark Opposes Voter Suppression Bill
House Republicans recently advanced legislation that would make it harder for millions of Americans to vote. The bill (H.R. 7296) would require every citizen filing a new or updated voter registration to provide a passport or a birth certificate paired with a current photo identification. This would add barriers to the right to vote for millions of Americans who do not have passports and for the 70 million women who have changed their last names after marriage so that their birth certificates do not match current identification. Congressman DeSaulnier opposed House passage of this reckless bill that would undermine voting rights, but despite his opposition, it passed the House andawaits consideration in the U.S. Senate.

Congressman DeSaulnier Votes to Protect Communities from Gun Violence
Last week, the House considered the Law-Enforcement Innovate to De-Escalate Act (H.R. 2189), legislation that would create a loophole for dangerous individuals to obtain certain weapons without proper oversight. The bill would establish a new category of "less-than-lethal" projectile devices and exempt them from key federal gun safety laws, which require background checks and serial numbers. This policy would allow prohibited individuals, such as people with felony or domestic violence convictions, to access these devices which can be modified into deadly firearms. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition, the bill passed the House and now awaits further action in the Senate.

Mark Votes to End Tariffs on Canada
In the first weeks of his presidency, President Trump issued sweeping tariffs oncountries across the globe, causing widespread economic disruption and damaging relationships with some of America's closest allies. This includes a 25% tariff on most imports from Canada, historically one of the United States' closest trading partners. As a result of the Trump Administration's tariffs, the annual cost of living for American families rose by almost $1,700 in 2025. Last week, the House considered a resolution(H.J.Res. 72) to terminate the President's harmful tariffs on Canada. H.J.Res. 72 passed with Congressman DeSaulnier's support and now awaits further considerationby the U.S. Senate.
