The DeSaulnier Digest: CA-10 Celebrates Independence Day and American Democracy
I was grateful to spend last week at home in the East Bay celebrating Independence Day with many of you in our community.
On this Fourth of July, I reflected on the vision our founders outlined for a republic, governed not by a monarch, but by a duly elected leader. That foundational principle of our democracy has been undermined by the Supreme Court decision in Trump v. United States, in which an extreme, Trump-shaped majority of the Supreme Court ruled that ex-President Trump has presumptive immunity for any "official acts" he committed as President. This decision makes it more difficult to hold any president – past, present, or future – accountable for crimes they commit. In ex-President Trump's case, the Supreme Court majority has at least partially shielded him for his role in undermining the results of a free and fair presidential election in 2020, including the four charges he has already been indicted on related to his involvement in the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. As Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in her dissent, the decision “makes a mockery of the principle, foundational to our Constitution and system of Government, that no man is above the law.” I echo these serious concerns and stand committed as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives to upholding our democracy.
Sincerely,
Mark DeSaulnier
Member of Congress
