Last week, the House of Representatives began its customary summer District Work Period, meaning that the House is out of session and I will be hard at work here in the East Bay meeting with local organizations, and most importantly, connecting with you.
To kick off the month, I am excited to share that I am hosting a Town Hall on Animal Welfare on Monday, August 3rd from 6:00 - 7:30 in Walnut Creek. At the event, I will share updates on my work in Congress to protect animals here in the East Bay and around the world.
I will also be joined by the President and CEO of Joybound People & Pets, Susan Lee Vick, and we look forward to taking your questions.

Congressman DeSaulnier Hosts Virtual Healthcare Town Hall
Last week, Mark hosted a virtual town hall to discuss the state of healthcare in our country with expert special guests Dr. Grant Colfax, Director of Contra Costa Health, and Vaishu Jawahar, Director of Policy at Protect Our Care. In addition to addressing how the Republicans' Big Ugly Bill will make healthcare less affordable and accessible for millions of Americans, the group also addressed constituent questions about the rise in cancer among young people, budget cuts to behavioral health services, and Secretary Kennedy's anti-vaccination campaign. Congressman DeSaulnier Honors the Life and Service of Mayor Sue Rainey
Congressman DeSaulnier spoke on the House floor to recognize the life and service of Sue Rainey, a dedicated public servant in the Bay Area who sadly passed away last month. Sue served as Mayor of Moraga and later as Mayor of Walnut Creek. She was also deeply involved in supporting cancer patients and their families through the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Cancer Support Community. Sue's legacy will be felt in our community for generations to come, and she will be deeply missed. To see Mark's remarks, click here or on the image below.
Legislation Considered on the House Floor Last Week
Last week, the House of Representatives considered legislation related to government funding, defense spending, and the war in Iran. More information on these bills below:
- H.Con.Res. 113 would allow Congress to provide over $70 billion to fund President Trump's illegal war in Iran, as well as institute burdensome requirements on millions of American voters. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition, H.Con.Res. 113 passed the House and now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
- H.Con.Res. 89 would direct the President to discontinue military action in Iran. Congressman DeSaulnier strongly supported the resolution, which passed the House in a bipartisan rebuke of the President's actions. It now awaits Senate consideration.
- H.R. 8800 would provide $1.15 trillion for the Department of Defense, as well as formally rename it the Department of War. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition, the bill passed the House and now awaits Senate consideration.
- H.R. 9770 would fund the government through December 4, 2026, while allowing the Trump Administration to send billions of dollars more to Border Patrol. Congressman DeSaulnier opposed this bill, but it passed the House and now awaits Senate consideration.
- H.R. 6955 would implement the most sweeping deregulation of Wall Street megabanks since before the 2008 global financial crisis. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition, H.R. 6955 passed the House and now awaits Senate consideration.
- H.R. 7008 purports to tackle insider trading while permitting Members of Congress to continue to own and sell stocks and even purchase certain securities and privately traded stocks. The bill also includes provisions that would suppress mail in voting. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition H.R. 7008 passed the House and now awaits Senate consideration.
- H.R. 8884 would allow the Trump Administration to wreak havoc on disability benefits. Congressman DeSaulnier strongly opposed this bill, which passed the House and now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
