The DeSaulnier Digest: Congressman DeSaulnier Condemns Political Violence
Like many of you, I was shocked by the shooting at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday. I join President Biden and leaders across the political spectrum in strongly denouncing political violence of any kind and am relieved that former President Trump is safe.
While our country has disagreements on important issues, violence is never acceptable. As President Biden said, "in America, we resolve our differences at the ballot box. Not with bullets." My thoughts are with the victims of this shooting and their families, and I sincerely hope we can turn down the temperature of our civil discourse and come together as a country.
Sincerely,
Mark DeSaulnier
Member of Congress
ON THE HOUSE FLOOR
Mark Commemorates Port Chicago Anniversary on House Floor
As we approach the 80th anniversary of the Port Chicago explosion this Wednesday, Mark remembered the lives of the hundreds who were killed and wounded. He also recognized the bravery of the Port Chicago 50 and called, once again, for their full exoneration in a speech on the House floor. Congressman DeSaulnier will be participating in more events this week to honor this anniversary and calling for justice for the Port Chicago 50. DeSaulnier Opposes Legislation that Fails to Meaningfully Address Issues Facing Californians
Last week, Republicans brought forth several pieces of legislation that wasted valuable time on political stunts rather than working to make life better for Americans. Congressman DeSaulnier opposed House passage of the following pieces of legislation:
- A resolution (H.Res. 1344) holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for declining to provide an audio recording of a conversation between President Biden and Special Council Robert Hur that the Justice Department had already provided a transcript of. The resolution failed to pass the House by a vote of 204-to-210 and received bipartisan opposition.
- Two bills that would kill energy efficiency standards for household appliances; one on refrigerators (H.R. 7637) and one on dishwashers (H.R. 7700), and drive up energy costs for Americans by billions of dollars. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition, H.R. 7637 passed the House by a vote of 212-to-192 and H.R. 7700 passed the House by a vote of 214-to-192.
Congressman DeSaulnier Defends the California Air Resources Board’s Regulations on Locomotive Emissions
Thanks to the Clean Air Act, which was signed into law by President Nixon, California has special authority to implement more stringent vehicle emissions standards than the federal standards. During a recent hearing at the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, the Congressman defended CARB’s right to apply for a waiver to impose more stringent emissions standards on locomotives in the state, and the need for the EPA to quickly approve it. Congressman DeSaulnier highlighted the many health benefits of transitioning the train industry towards zero-emissions, including reduced exposure to toxic air pollution, and decreased premature deaths due to air pollution. As a former CARB Board Member, Congressman DeSaulnier will continue to fight to reduce toxic air pollution for all Californians.
