Mark Reintroduces the Mental Health Matters Act
As it stands, one in six children experience mental illness each year. Having lost his father to suicide in 1989, Mark has been a leader in advocating for improved access to mental health care. Upon reintroduction of the Mental Health Matters Act, legislation he authored to support school-based mental health services, he spoke with the Pleasanton Weekly about how this bill would help address the mental health crisis in this country. LEGISLATIVE UDPATES
Congressman DeSaulnier Opposes Wrongful Detention Bill
Recently, House Republicans put forward the Laken Riley Act (H.R. 29), a bill that exploits Ms. Riley's tragic death last year and would have done nothing to stop her killing. H.R. 29 would require the Department of Homeland Security to arrest and detain all undocumented immigrants accused of committing non-violent theft, regardless of whether they are guilty. Under this bill, an undocumented person who is arrested for shoplifting would be detained and later deported, even if police admit that the arrest was wrongful. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition, the bill passed the House by a vote of 264-to-159. This bill is not a serious effort to fix our nation's immigration challenges. Congressman DeSaulnier remains committed to supporting evidence-based policies that would meaningfully address our broken immigration system and the issues at the border.
