The DeSaulnier Digest: Countdown to Republican Shutdown
Just over 24 hours out from a federal government shutdown, I am back in Washington, D.C. ready to pass a funding bill that keeps our government open and working for the American people while protecting them from devastating health care premium hikes. Unfortunately, House Republicans have decided to stay home and not return to work until next week, after the shutdown deadline has passed.
Without Republican action, not only will the government shut down, but tax credits lowering health care costs will also expire, raising health care premiums for more than 20 million Americans.
To discuss the current state of play and how a shutdown could affect you and our community, I am hosting a virtual town hall TOMORROW, Tuesday, September 30th at 6:00 p.m.
Click here to RSVP or join the YouTube livestream here. I look forward to providing an update and taking your questions.
Sincerely,
Mark DeSaulnier
Member of Congress
IN THE COMMUNITY
Congressman DeSaulnier Joins Hunger Action Month Panel
Mark sat down with leaders on food insecurity for a panel on Hunger Action Month at the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. The Republicans' Big Ugly Bill included steep cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which families across the country and in CA-10 rely on to access healthy food. In the face of these cuts, nonprofits like the Food Bank and others are preparing to fill the massive gap to try to ensure that families in our community do not go hungry.

Mark Continues Education Listening Tours Around CA-10
Congressman DeSaulnier joined students, educators, and administrators on visits to two of the higher education institutions in CA-10 - Diablo Valley College and St. Mary's College. Mark also visited Valley View Middle School in Pleasant Hill to highlight upcoming youth programs to celebrate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As a senior member of the Committee on Education and Workforce, hearing from students about their educational experience and priorities is a critical part of Mark's job.

Congressman DeSaulnier Meets with Hijas Del Campo
Mark sat down with leaders from Hijas Del Campo, a Contra Costa-based nonprofit that serves migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families by combatting food insecurity, investing in education, and ensuring access to health care and affordable housing. The group discussed the fear that the Trump Administration's actions is causing in immigrant communities, including its use of masked and unidentified ICE agents.

Mark Visits Christian Church Homes in Brentwood
During a visit at the Christian Church Homes Sycamore Place in Brentwood, Congressman DeSaulnier connected with staff and residents to discuss affordable housing and proposed Republican cuts to programs that CA-10 seniors rely on. In their proposed budget, House Republicans also included deep cuts to affordable housing programs for low-income families.
