The DeSaulnier Digest: Democrats Fighting Back to Protect The Right to Choose Against Republican Attacks

May 9, 2022
DeSaulnier Digest

Last week, the nation saw a draft opinion of a Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe v. Wade, going against 50 years of precedent and threatening reproductive freedom and the right of millions of Americans to make their own choices about their personal health care. Moreover, this decision would threaten the constitutional right to privacy, jeopardizing other personal liberties such as the right of LGBTQ+ individuals to marry.

This extreme decision from a partisan court is the culmination of a decades-long effort by Republicans to overturn a woman's right to choose. And in Congress, Democrats are fighting back. I am proud to have cosponsored the Women's Health Protection Act, which passed the House last fall and would enshrine in law a woman's right to access abortion. The Senate must now pass this critical legislation by any means necessary, including abolition of the filibuster. The constitutional right to choose and the bodily autonomy of millions of Americans depend on it.

Sincerely,

Mark DeSaulnier
Member of Congress

Congressman DeSaulnier Visits Location of Contra Costa Crisis Hub

To expand access to mental health care in our community, our office secured federal funding for Contra Costa Health Services to both establish the Contra Costa Crisis Hub and to expand the County's Mobile Crisis Response Team, which will help more Contra Costans get the care they need. Congressman DeSaulnier recently visited the Hub and discussed plans for the program with their team. Working to end the stigma surrounding behavioral health care and increasing access to these critical services is personal to Mark and he was proud to have played a part in making this program possible.
