The DeSaulnier Digest: Democrats Remain Open to Bipartisanship

October 23, 2023
DeSaulnier Digest

After the extreme faction of the Republican Party voted to oust Kevin McCarthy as Speaker, Republicans in the House remain unable to come to a consensus on electing a new Speaker. Last week, Congressman Jim Jordan, one of the most extreme MAGA Republicans and right-hand-man to ex-President Trump, failed three times to get enough votes to win the Speakership and has since ended his bid for the position.

House rules are clear that no other business can be done until there is a Speaker, so Republican disunity and dysfunction has rendered the House unable to conduct legislative business, which is especially problematic as we inch closer to a government shutdown on November 17th and as our allies around the world are in need of aid.

My fellow Democrats and I continue to make clear to our colleagues across the aisle that there is a bipartisan path forward if they are willing to work with us and govern through consensus in the best interest of the country.

Sincerely,

Mark DeSaulnier
Member of Congress
