LEGISLATIVE UPDATES
DeSaulnier Votes to Protect Americans' Data from Chinese Communist Party
As a Member of Congress, Congressman DeSaulnier wants to ensure that Americans and their personal information are not exploited by foreign adversaries through TikTok and other social media platforms. Under its current business model, TikTok makes it possible for China to surveil American users, access their personal information, and spread disinformation. Last week, the House of Representatives voted on the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (H.R. 7521). Despite the misinformation out there, this bill does not outright ban TikTok. Rather, it would require TikTok's owner, ByteDance, to stop working with foreign adversaries, such as China. If this bill is signed into law, TikTok would have 180 days to follow these new safety requirements. If it chooses to not comply, application stores in the United States would be disallowed from hosting TikTok on their platforms. With Congressman DeSaulnier’s support, H.R. 7521 passed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 352-to-65 and now awaits consideration by the U.S. Senate.
Congressman DeSaulnier Opposes Misguided Bill on Federal Office Space
The General Services Administration (GSA) is responsible for supporting basic functions of federal agencies, including providing office space. Last week, House Republicans advanced a bill (H.R. 6276) that would direct the GSA to use an arbitrary measure of occupancy rates and then reduce space available to federal agencies to do their important work. This misguided effort doesn’t account for the realities of today's workforce arrangements, like employees who work in the field or away from their desks as part of official duties or those who telework part of the time. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier’s opposition, this bill passed the House by a vote of 217-to-203.
DeSaulnier Opposes Anti-Immigrant Resolution
After flip-flopping on efforts to increase border security, extreme MAGA Republicans in the House recently passed a nonbinding resolution (H.Res. 1065) condemning the Biden Administration’s immigration policies. This resolution demonizes immigrants who come to America in search of a better life and to escape violence and persecution in their home countries, while doing nothing to help fix our broken immigration system. For these reasons, Congressman DeSaulnier opposed this resolution. Despite his opposition, it passed the House by a vote of 226-to-193.
