The DeSaulnier Digest: Happy Thanksgiving!
In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, I have been reflecting on all I am grateful for, including the opportunity to represent the great community of Contra Costa County in Congress. I hope you are able to gather with family and friends this holiday season and that you stay safe and healthy.
Best wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Sincerely,
Mark DeSaulnier
Member of Congress
BILL TO PROTECT WORKERS
Congressman DeSaulnier Introduces Legislation to Protect Workers from Mismanaged Closures and Layoffs
While big corporations rake in record profits, local communities and their employees are treated as disposable rather than the engine of their growth, as we saw recently in billionaire CEO Elon Musk's haphazard firing of over 7,500 Twitter employees. With more layoffs expected in the tech industry, by expanding and strengthening existing law to protect workers from such unfair layoffs, the Justice for Local Communities and Workers Act (H.R. 9305) would ensure CEOs like Musk are held accountable and that the balance of power is restored to the American workforce. WASHINGTON, D.C. UPDATE
House Passes Bill to Support Sexual Harassment Survivors with DeSaulnier's Support
Thanks to the progress of the Me Too movement, more people are speaking out about the abuses they have faced. To protect the rights of survivors of sexual assault and harassment, the House passed the bipartisan Speak Out Act (S. 4524), which prohibits the use of "forced nondisclosure agreements (NDAs)" that silence victims. This critical legislation passed the House by a vote of 315-to-109 with Congressman DeSaulnier's support. The bill now heads to President Biden's desk to be signed into law.
U.S. Senate Votes to Protect the Rights of LGBTQ+ Americans
In the wake of the Supreme Court's assault on reproductive freedom in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, there is legitimate cause for concern that the Supreme Court will issue future rulings against other fundamental rights, including the right of Americans to marry who they love. To protect this right, the U.S. Senate last week advanced the Respect for Marriage Act (H.R. 8404), which would require the federal government to recognize all marriages legally performed in every state. Congressman DeSaulnier looks forward to the Senate passing this legislation after the Thanksgiving holiday.
Mark Continues Advocacy Efforts on Behalf of the Disability Community
Promoting the rights of the disability community has been among Congressman DeSaulnier's top priorities throughout his time in government. This week, he met with Disability Rights California to discuss their shared efforts to advance equity and accessibility.
