House Passes Aviation Safety Bill Led by Congressman DeSaulnier
Since 2017, when an Air Canada flight was involved in a near-miss incident at San Francisco International Airport, Congressman DeSaulnier has been working to improve the outdated Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system that played a role in the incident. In the wake of a NOTAM system failure in mid-January 2023 that grounded flights across the country for several hours, Congressman DeSaulnier co-led House passage of a bipartisan bill, the NOTAM Improvement Act (H.R. 346), that would create a task force to identify and make recommendations on improving the NOTAM system. This bill passed the House last week with Congressman DeSaulnier's support by a vote of 424-to-4. The Congressman spoke with the New York Times about the bill following its passage in the House. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Mark Votes Against Irresponsible Legislation to Expand Oil and Gas Drilling on Federal Lands
While House Democrats have been working simultaneously to lower gas prices for Americans and invest in renewable energy, House Republicans advanced legislation to open federal lands and waters to even more drilling by Big Oil. Congressman DeSaulnier opposed House passage of the Strategic Production Response Act(H.R. 21), which would require most drawdowns of oil from the national Strategic Petroleum Reserve to be accompanied by plans for a corresponding increase in oil and gas production on federal lands. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition, this bill passed the House by a vote of 221-to-205.
