The DeSaulnier Digest: House Democrats Building Back Better for American Families

November 22, 2021
DeSaulnier Digest

In a major victory for families across the country and here in Contra Costa, the House passed the Build Back Better Act, legislation that would make historic investments in education, child care, paid leave, health care, housing, and more. Through support for early, primary, and secondary education and child care, we are finally ensuring that all children have the opportunity to thrive both in and out of the classroom, no matter where they live or how much their parents earn. From free preschool for three- and four-year-olds to lowering the cost of high-quality child care, this bill would give over 90% of parents with young children the opportunity to reenter the workforce knowing their children are safe, cared for, and learning. By finally calling on the wealthiest Americans and big corporations to pay their fair share, every provision in this bill is paid for and we are making a statement that our children are our priority. As we head into Thanksgiving, I am grateful for the privilege of representing you in Congress and having the opportunity to advance legislation like the Build Back Better Act that would impact so many Americans. I hope you and your family have a happy and peaceful Thanksgiving and, as always, do not hesitate to contact our office if we can be of assistance.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Congressman DeSaulnier Joins Colleagues in Censuring Member of Congress
Earlier this month, Republican Congressman Paul Gosar posted a manipulated video on his social media accounts depicting himself killing Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and attacking President Biden. His actions are reprehensible. He used the resources given to him by the taxpayers of the United States to promote this hateful content and has defended his actions. On top of this, there are some serious questions about Rep. Gosar's role in the insurrection on January 6th. We must do everything possible to rid our government institutions of threats of violence. That is why Congressman DeSaulnier was a proud sponsor of legislation (H.Res. 789) to censure Rep. Gosar for his actions and to strip him of his committee assignments. The House passed this legislation by a vote of 223-to-207.

IN COMMITTEE

House Committee on Oversight and Reform
Last week, the Oversight Committee held a hearing on the pervasive problem of military and veteran suicides, an issue that is personal to Congressman DeSaulnier. Mark has been working to end the stigma surrounding mental health struggles and to help save lives by expanding access to behavioral health care throughout his career. Tune in to hear more about these efforts and how Congress can help support American veterans by clicking here or on the image below.

House Committee on Education and Labor
Over the course of the pandemic, Congress has made historic investments in our nation's public education system. At a recent Education and Labor Committee hearing, Congressman DeSaulnier spoke with officials from the Department of Education about ensuring this money is spent the way it was intended to help support schools, students, and their families. IN THE NEWS

Congressman DeSaulnier spoke with NBC Bay Area about evidence the NBC team uncovered regarding abuse of our student visa system and why it's incumbent on Congress to make sure our immigration system is fair and allows the best and the brightest to study and work here.
