The DeSaulnier Digest: House Democrats Stand Against Republican Attempts to Slash Medicaid

March 3, 2025
DeSaulnier Digest

Last week, House Republicans narrowly passed their extreme, reckless budget that threatens to cut two trillion dollars across programs like Medicaid, student loans, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), school lunch programs, and more all to fund even more tax cuts for corporations and the ultrawealthy. In CA-10, these cuts would put more than 130,000 residents at risk of losing their health care, including children and seniors, and threaten SNAP benefits for 43,000.

I joined all my Democratic colleagues in voting no on this budget scheme and standing with the American people against these harmful cuts.

In addition to voting against this budget, I also joined my Democratic colleagues in calling on Speaker Johnson to oppose Republican efforts to cut billions from Medicaid and to protect Medicare and Social Security.

As we prepare to hear from the President in tomorrow’s joint address to Congress, I will be joined by Concord resident and disability advocate, Alisa Rosillo, who as a mother to children with disabilities and Chapter Leader of Changing Spaces, California, knows firsthand how federal services, including those offered under Medicaid, are a lifeline for the health, wellbeing, and success of the disability community. Medicaid is the largest provider of health care to people with disabilities, by covering more than 10 million people, and helps support seniors and people with disabilities who rely on home- and community-based services. In joining me at the joint address, Ms. Rosillo is sharing her family’s story so the President and Republicans in Congress can see the human face of the disastrous consequences of their reckless budget.

DeSaulnier Opposes Partisan Attacks on Pollution-Reducing Measures
The Congressional Review Act allows Congress to review and overturn rules issued by federal agencies. Under the Biden Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced two rules that aim to reduce air pollution, protect public health, and reduce household costs for energy. In response, House Republicans advanced legislation to overturn these proposed rules and prevent similar ones from ever being issued. H.J.Res. 35 would terminate the EPA’s rule to issue charges for waste methane emissions on oil and gas facilities, and H.J.Res. 20 would overturn the DOE’s rule on energy efficiency standards for residential tankless water heaters. Despite the Congressman’s strong opposition, H.J.Res. 35 passed the House by a vote of 220-to-206, and H.J.Res. 20 passed by a vote of 221-to-198.
