Congressman DeSaulnier Speaks Out Against Rollbacks to Chemical Safety Protections
Last week, Congressman DeSaulnier spoke at a press conference with the League of Conservation Voters and the Coalition to Prevent Chemical Disasters to oppose the EPA's proposed changes to the Risk Management Program rule. The proposal would roll back key chemical safety protections, including requirements for safer technology assessments, worker protections, and emergency information for nearby communities. During the event, Congressman DeSaulnier emphasized the importance of protecting workers and fenceline communities, drawing on his longstanding efforts to strengthen chemical safety and oversight, particularly through the Chemical Safety Board. He also called on the Administration to reverse course, warning that the proposal puts public health and safety at risk.
Mark Addresses President Trump's Dismantling of the Department of Education
For over a year, the Trump Administration has sought to dismantle the Department of Education by slashing staff, eliminating grants, and shifting key responsibilities to other federal agencies. At a recent hearing of the Education & Workforce Committee, Congressman DeSaulnier spoke about the benefits of diversity in higher education and the need to ensure research and innovation, as well as civil liberties, are protected. Mark also highlighted how the Trump Administration's staffing cuts and office closures at two key Department of Education offices, the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) and Federal Student Aid (FSA), have decimated the ability of those offices to do their important work. Congressman DeSaulnier Introduces Bill to Support Students with Disabilities
During the 2024-2025 school year, about 18 percent of all public school students, or 9.8 million students, received services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or had a 504 educational plan. Last week, Congressman DeSaulnier reintroduced the Protection and Advocacy for Student Success Act (H.R. 8073), a bill that would help students with disabilities receive the educational support to which they are legally entitled. This bill would provide direct federal funding to Protection and Advocacy Systems (P&As), which are agencies that provide legally-based advocacy services for people with disabilities, so that they can ensure the rights of students are upheld.
COMMUNITY PROJECT FUNDING
Marsh Drive Class I Bikeway Project
Mark is bringing back $1.2 million in federal funding for the Contra Costa County Public Works Department to create a bike path along Marsh Drive in unincorporated Pacheco, increasing safety for all road users and closing a critical gap in the County-wide bicycle network.
Village Parkway Complete Streets Improvements Project
To improve safety and accessibility in Dublin, Mark secured $850,000 in Community Project Funding for the City of Dublin to narrow vehicle lanes, add lighting, construct buffered bike lanes, widen sidewalks, and create protected intersections on Village Parkway.
