DISTRICT UPDATES
As we approach Veterans Day, our office held a Veterans Town Hall and Resource Fair to discuss the work we do to support veterans through casework and legislation. We were joined by a variety of local veteran-serving organizations that provided resources and shared more about their work to help veterans. Thank you to everyone who participated!
LEGISLATIVE UPDATES
Mark Votes Against Irresponsible Federal Budget Legislation
Last week, House Republicans advanced two government funding bills that contained steep budget cuts and other harmful provisions. The Legislative Branch Appropriations Act (H.R. 4364), which funds Congress, would eliminate funding for the House Office of Diversity and Inclusion and undo Congress’s work to combat climate change and plastic waste. The Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act (H.R. 4821) would cut funding for the Environmental Protection Agency by approximately 40% and expand fossil fuel production. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier’s opposition, H.R. 4364 passed the House by a vote of 214-to-197 and H.R. 4821 passed the House by a vote of 213-to-203.
DeSaulnier Opposes Disingenuous, Partisan Israel Funding Bill
In response to President Biden’s call for security aid to Israel and humanitarian aid to Gaza, House Republicans authored a disingenuous, irresponsible package, the Israel Security Supplemental Appropriations Act (H.R. 6126), that did not include much-needed humanitarian assistance to innocent Palestinians. The bill was also a reckless, unprecedented attempt to tie emergency aid to domestic funding cuts to gut the IRS, protect billionaires, and further increase the deficit. While the bill passed in the House by a vote of 226-to-196, the U.S. Senate Democratic leadership has indicated it will not consider this bill.
Congressman DeSaulnier Speaks in Support of Work to Account for the True Costs of Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The social cost of carbon is an important tool that allows us to put an economic value on the cost of greenhouse gas emissions to society. As we inch closer to the tipping point for being able to reverse the impacts of climate change, the social cost of carbon is even more important. The Biden Administration has directed federal agencies to consider the social costs of carbon when making decisions in order to account for the true health and environmental impact of carbon emissions on public health, pollution, and communities. Congressman DeSaulnier offered an amendment to the bill to allow this important work to continue, but it was defeated by House Republicans.
