IN COMMITTEE
Congressman DeSaulnier Addresses Rising Hate and Bigotry in K-12 Schools
There is no place for antisemitism anywhere in American society, including at schools and any instance in which a student is harassed, assaulted, or otherwise attacked for who they are must be investigated. Recently, Congressman DeSaulnier took part in a hearing before the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education that included leaders from three public school districts and one expert from the American Civil Liberties Union to hear what they are doing to address the rise of antisemitism and other forms of hate impacting students across the country. Congressman DeSaulnier Discusses the Importance of Safety and Transparency in Energy Transition
During a recent House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing on pipeline safety, Congressman DeSaulnier highlighted the importance of transitioning our energy sources, while ensuring that the transport of newer energy sources remains safe. Congressman DeSaulnier spoke about the importance of these issues to the 10th Congressional District, given the two nearby refineries that are transitioning towards biofuels and the others that are still processing fossil fuels and the impact this work and these fransfers have on both the workers and nearby communities. LEGISLATIVE UPDATES
Bipartisan Coalition Blocks Attempts to Remove Speaker Johnson and Throw House into Chaos
In coordination with other far-right conservatives, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene attempted to remove Mike Johnson from his position as Speaker of the House using a parliamentary procedure known as the motion to vacate the chair. House Democrats joined with the overwhelming majority of House Republicans to block consideration of this move that would have sent our government into chaos again and prevented the House from working on issues important to the American people. While Congressman DeSaulnier does not agree with Speaker Johnson on many things, he shares the views of his Democratic colleagues that we should not allow a small but vocal minority on the far right to hold the House hostage. With Congressman DeSaulnier's support, the House blocked consideration of the effort by a vote of 359-to-43, with 7 abstaining, and Speaker Johnson was not removed.
Congressman DeSaulnier Votes Against Effort to Stop New Energy Efficiency Standards for Appliances
Recent energy efficiency standards for appliances were calculated to save consumers $1 trillion over the next 30 years, and as a result of energy efficiency standards, Americans already save up to $500 a year on utility bills. Last week, the House considered a bill (H.R. 6192) that would hinder the Department of Energy's ability to finalize and enforce energy efficiency standards for home appliances, which help save families money and spark innovation in appliance technology. Despite the Congressman's strong opposition, the bill passed the House by a vote of 212-to-195.
House Passes Bill to Expand Mineral Mining Despite Mark's Opposition
An 1872 law requires mining companies to show that minerals are present in an area before building roads and other support facilities on site. Last week, House Republicans advanced a bill (H.R. 2925) that would make it easier for mining companies to use public lands even if minerals are present. Congressman DeSaulnier opposed this legislation because it does not advance sustainability in mining. Despite his opposition, it passed the House by a vote of 216-to-195.
