The DeSaulnier Digest: New Speaker of the House Elected

October 30, 2023
DeSaulnier Digest

House Republicans last week elected Representative Mike Johnson as the 56th Speaker of the House after 22 days without a Speaker. The vacancy prevented the House from considering legislation to fund the government beyond the November 17th deadline, provide assistance to address global conflicts, and address other critical priorities. While I opposed the election of Speaker Johnson due to his anti-democracy, anti-LBTQ, and anti-woman record in Congress, I hope House Republicans will work with Democrats to address the pressing issues facing our nation and the world.

Sincerely,

Mark DeSaulnier
Member of Congress

IN THE HOUSE

Mark Opposes Funding Bill with Harmful Climate and Energy Provisions
The Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act (H.R. 4394), which would provide funding for the U.S. Department of Energy, the Bureau of Reclamation, the Army Corps of Engineers, and other agencies, includes several Republican-authored provisions that would cut funding to energy efficiency programs, environmental cleanup activities, and programs that advance the deployment of innovative energy technology. This bill would build on Republican efforts to pull back the great climate investments passed as part of the Inflation Reduction Act and other Biden Administration efforts to address climate. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's strong opposition, this bill passed the House by a vote of 210-to-199.
