The DeSaulnier Digest: Recognizing Memorial Day

May 30, 2023
DeSaulnier Digest

This weekend we joined the community for Memorial Day events around the district. I was proud to spend the day with servicemembers, veterans, and members of our community, and to recognize those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

If you are a veteran and are ever in need of assistance with the benefits you have earned and deserve, we welcome you to reach out to our offices in Walnut Creek or Antioch by phone at (925) 933-2660.

MARK PASSES AVIATION SAFETY BILL

Since the 2017 near-miss incident at San Francisco International Airport, Congressman DeSaulnier has been working to improve the safety of our airspace for both the aviation workforce and the flying public. In January 2023, the FAA called for a nationwide ground stop of flights due to an outage of the outdated Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system, which is a key system meant to share important safety updates with pilots. This week, the House passed the Congressman's NOTAM Improvement Act (H.R. 346) that would update this system and improve safety. The bill passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and is headed to the President's desk to be signed into law. You can hear Mark speak about the importance of this bill on the House Floor by clicking here or on the image below.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Congressman DeSaulnier Opposes Effort to Cancel Biden's Student Debt Relief Plan
Currently, 21,700 borrowers from California's 10th Congressional District have qualified for student debt relief under President Biden's plan. House Republicans recently advanced H.J.Res. 45, a resolution that would nullify the Biden Administration's one-time federal student loan debt relief plan, the pause on federal student loan payments, and other crucial student loan program waivers and modifications made from September 2022 to December 2022. If enacted into law, this resolution would create chaos throughout the federal student loan system, and prevent future action to support students and borrowers during emergencies. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition, the resolution passed by a vote of 218-to-203.

DeSaulnier Votes Against Weakening Truck Emission Standards
The Environmental Protection Agency recently finalized emission standards for heavy-duty trucks, which are expected to reduce unhealthy and planet warming nitrogen oxide emissions by 48% by 2045. These new standards are also expected to provide significant health benefits including preventing 6,700 fewer hospital visits annually and 1.1 million fewer lost school days for children. House Republicans advanced a resolution to repeal these truck standards (S.J.Res. 11), a move that would harm the health of our communities and prevent further action on climate change. This resolution passed the House by a vote of 221-to-203 despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition.

CA-10 IN D.C.

The Congressman met with East Bay Regional Park District Board Members and staff last week in our D.C. office. The group had a wonderful conversation on our regional response to California's winter storms and progress on the Marsh Creek trail.
