Thurgood Marshall Regional Park - Home of the Port Chicago 50 has historical significance as the location of the Port Chicago explosion which tragically resulted in the deaths of 320 sailors on July 17, 1944. With the establishment of this park, East Bay Regional Park District will be able to preserve the history of the Bay Area's wartime efforts and help tell the story of African American servicemembers who fought against discrimination and injustice during the second World War.
