The DeSaulnier Digest: Standing in Solidarity with Senator Booker
Last week, I went over to the Senate Floor to stand in solidarity with New Jersey Senator Cory Booker as he called attention to the illegal actions of the Trump Administration as it attempts to cut programs Americans rely on like health care and Social Security in the longest speech in Senate history. For over 25 hours, the Senator inspired our nation and drove home the point that we are not backing down. Sincerely,
Mark DeSaulnier
Member of Congress

Democrats Fight for Congressional Reforms that Support New Parents in Congress
Recently, a Congresswoman from Colorado was forced to fly to Washington, D.C. one month after giving birth to vote in the House because House Republicans arbitrarily cancelled proxy voting, leaving her with no other recourse to represent her district than to risk her health and the wellbeing of her newborn. Congressman DeSaulnier supports a resolution that would allow Members of Congress who are new parents to temporarily vote by proxy so that they can continue to represent their constituents while they recover or spend time with their newborn. Last week, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson attempted to permanently block this resolution by sneaking a provision into an unrelated measure, but a bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives, including Representative DeSaulnier, rejected his cynical ploy. In response, Speaker Johnson cancelled all further votes for the week rather than allow necessary flexibility for new parents to be adopted.

Mark Discusses Ways to Improve Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance
In 2023, almost 165 million Americans had health insurance through an employer. At this year’s first hearing of the Education & Workforce Committee’s Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions, House Republicans advocated for policies that would undermine the Affordable Care Act’s consumer protections and leave consumers with worse health coverage. This discussion also happened against the backdrop of Republican leaders’ work to cut Medicaid, another critically important source of health coverage, in order to provide tax cuts for billionaires and large corporations. In his role as the top Democrat on the Subcommittee, Congressman DeSaulnier engaged with experts to discuss real reforms that would lower costs for consumers and improve access to care.
