LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
DeSaulnier Opposes Baseless, Partisan Attempt to Impeach President Biden
Since President Biden took office, extremist Republicans have expressed a strong desire to impeach him in retaliation for the two impeachments of ex-President Trump, despite the fact that President Biden has not committed an impeachable offense. House Republicans took a first step toward impeachment proceedings by voting to send an impeachment resolution to the relevant House committees. Congressman DeSaulnier voted against this partisan abuse of the impeachment process, which passed the House by a vote of 219-to-208 over Congressman DeSaulnier’s objections.
Congressman DeSaulnier Votes to Protect Biden’s Student Debt Relief Plan
President Biden’s student debt plan will cancel up to $20,000 in student debt for tens of millions of Americans. Last week, House Republicans attempted to override President Biden’s veto of legislation (H.J.Res. 45) that would terminate his student debt relief plan and any future loan relief efforts. Terminating President Biden’s plan would create chaos throughout the federal student loan system and prevent future action to support students and borrowers during emergencies. Congressman DeSaulnier voted against this effort, and it failed to gain the 2/3rds majority required for passage, by a vote of 221-to-206.
Mark Stands Up for Quality, Affordable Health Coverage
The Affordable Care Act and other landmark federal laws have helped tens of millions of Americans access quality health insurance to make sure they are able to get the care they need when they get sick or injured. House Republicans tried to strip critical protections that keep sicker individuals from having to pay more insurance with a bill this week (H.R. 3799). Despite Congressman DeSaulnier’s opposition, H.R. 3799 passed the House by a vote of 220-to-209.
