Congressman DeSaulnier Successfully Passes Measures to Improve Election Security
Last week, the House passed the For the People Act (H.R. 1), a sweeping package of voting and election reforms. The bill included two provisions authored by Congressman DeSaulnier that would improve election security. The first provision establishes a task force of experts at the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to determine the impact of automated social media accounts, commonly known as “bots,” on elections and public discourse. The second provision would require state election agencies to be notified about foreign efforts to interfere in an election. The For the People Act is a transformational voting rights, anti-corruption, ethics, and clean elections reform package designed to provide comprehensive democracy reform. The bill protects and expands the right to vote, preserves the integrity of American elections, and works to address the influence of special interest money in the electoral process. The Congressman was proud to join his colleagues in voting to support this legislation, which passed the House by a vote of 220-to-210.
House Passes George Floyd Justice in Policing Act
Now is the time to come together as a nation to dismantle the systems that were built to disadvantage people of color, and last week, the House did just that by passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act (H.R. 1280). H.R. 1280 is a comprehensive approach to hold police accountable, change the culture of law enforcement, empower our communities, and build trust between law enforcement and our communities by addressing systemic racism and bias to help save lives. Congressman DeSaulnier voted in support of this bill, which passed the house by a vote of 220-to-212.
