LEGISLATIVE UPDATES
Congressman DeSaulnier Authors Bill to Increase Affordable Housing
Communities across the country, and especially in the Bay Area, are facing housing crises with few affordable housing options. The Congressman has long worked to address this issue, including through introduction of his Housing Innovation Act (H.R. 855). This bill would help communities explore innovative housing solutions, like building accessory dwelling units or adapting buildings into multiple housing units to address their specific needs. Creative ideas like this can help states build more affordable housing options.
House Republicans Push Bill to Bolster Fracking
The Administration has made it a priority to increase fossil fuel mining and use, while attacking efforts to expand renewable energy. Last week, House Republicans advanced a bill (H.R. 26) that would prohibit a president from banning fracking, something a president has never done. The U.S. is already a top producer of oil and gas, and should be exploring how to shift towards cleaner energy sources that reduce negative impacts on public health and our communities. Despite strong Democratic opposition, H.R. 26 passed by a vote of 226-to-188.
