LEGISLATIVE UPDATES
Congressman DeSaulnier Introduces Bill to Protect Children from Allergic Reactions
Of the 33 million Americans with food allergies, more than 4 million are children, and 25% of all first-time allergic reactions happen to children while they are at school. To help make sure every child at school is safe, Congressman DeSaulnier introduced the Protecting Children with Food Allergies Act (H.R. 9550) alongside Co-Chair of the Congressional Food Allergy Research Caucus Congresswoman Doris Matsui and Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill. This bill would require school food service personnel to be trained to recognize, respond to, and prevent food-caused allergic reactions, helping to prevent anaphylaxis among students. Additionally, H.R. 9550 would incorporate food allergy information into its nutrition education materials for participants under the Special Supplemental Nutrition program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. Mark Highlights Needed Reforms to Improve Health Insurance for Working Americans
Fifty years ago, Congress passed the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), which regulates pensions and health insurance plans provided by employers. On the 50th anniversary of ERISA being passed, the Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce held a hearing on ERISA and ways to improve the law. In his role as the top Democrat on the Subcommittee, Congressman DeSaulnier discussed ways to further protect consumers from high drug costs, surprise medical bills, and improper denials of insurance claims. House Votes on Bills that Fail to Move Country Forward
Last week, House Republicans advanced bills (H.R. 1516, H.R. 1398, H.R. 9456, H.R. 1425, and H.R. 7980) that attempted to exploit fears about China to implement regressive and in some cases biased policies that do nothing to advance our country's interests. Congressman DeSaulnier opposed each bill, but despite his opposition, they all passed the House and now await consideration by the U.S. Senate.
