LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
House Passes Bill to Avert Debt Ceiling Crisis
The U.S. Department of the Treasury has warned that the federal government will reach the debt limit around October 18th. Without action to raise the debt limit, the government's ability to pay the debts incurred by the Trump Administration and meet its obligations on Social Security checks, military pay, Medicare benefits, and many other important programs would be at risk. Congressman DeSaulnier voted to pass a bill to temporarily suspend the debt limit until mid-December 2022 (S. 1301). The bill passed by a vote of 219-to-212.Twice last week Senate Republicans blocked a vote to raise the debt ceiling. They need to stop playing games so the U.S. can pay its bills and not default for the first time in history.
Vote to Fund Government
Every year, the House must pass funding bills to keep the lights on at federal agencies and fund much-needed programs. Funding was set to expire last Thursday, but the House passed a short-term funding bill to keep the doors open while the rest of the budget is finalized. Congressman DeSaulnier voted in support of this bill, known as the Extending Government Funding and Delivering Emergency Assistance Act (H.R. 5305), which passed the House by a vote of 254-to-175. President Biden signed the bill into law the same day, avoiding a government shutdown.
