DeSaulnier Digest

Dear Contra Costa Residents:

I am honored to inform you that the Congressional Management Foundation announced our office as a finalist in the first-ever Democracy Awards for outstanding Constituent Service. My top priority in Congress is to serve you and your family, and I hope you will continue to contact our office with any questions, issues, or concerns you may have. Each time that I reflect on our community, I am motivated by the high level of civic engagement, and it is thanks to the interest from Contra Costa residents that we were able to be nominated for this esteemed honor.

"Constituent service has been the hallmark of Representative Mark DeSaulnier (D-CA-11) and his office since his election in 2015. The Representative personally has met almost 9,000 constituents in his 53 town hall meetings and mobile district office hours, including a marathon session that lasted FIVE HOURS to ensure all constituents' needs were addressed. To help keep constituents informed, Representative DeSaulnier goes on Facebook Live to explain in real-time hot button issues happening in Washington and maintains an impressive four-day response time for constituents who send in emails regarding congressional activities."

In fact, since we were nominated for this award, our office has hosted another six town halls, with our 60th town hall and mobile district office hour scheduled for this Saturday, March 3rd in Concord. Details for the town hall are listed below, and you can confirm attendance by RSVPing here.

GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION TOWN HALL

In the wake of the Parkland, Florida shooting we hosted a timely and important conversation on gun violence prevention in Lafayette. It was inspiring to see so many residents of all ages take time out of their busy schedules to come together and work towards solutions that would help improve the safety of our communities and our schools.

Below are some of the highlights from the town hall, and if you were unable to join us you can watch the live stream on Facebook here.

As our communities move forward and consider how to address the gun violence epidemic in America, I hope you will take a moment to share your thoughts and opinions with me on what actions Congress should take to curb gun violence. Click here to take our gun violence survey.

MARK AROUND TOWN

Meeting with Marco

Marco is a remarkable young man and Dreamer from Contra Costa County. He works with those who suffer from addiction and has helped many re-enter society after serving prison sentences. We shared Marco's story with Leader Nancy Pelosi for her record breaking 8-hour speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives in support of Dreamers. For Marco and all dreamers, Republican Leadership should allow an open debate and a vote on bipartisan immigration legislation.

Safe Coasts, Oceans, and Seaside Towns (COAST) Act (H.R. 4888) – codifies important safety regulations put in place after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.

LETTERS MARK RECENTLY SENT

DeSaulnier-led letter to the Comptroller General of the United States Gene Dodaro – calling for a non-partisan, Government Accountability Office study on how the Federal Aviation Administration is tracking and responding to near-miss incidents at airports across the nation.

Letter to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly regarding Jared Kushner's interim security clearance – the President's son-in-law has been working with a temporary security clearance since January 2017. His business around the globe makes him particularly vulnerable to targeting by foreign government agents. I joined my colleague Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) in calling on White House Chief of Staff John Kelly to reconsider Mr. Kushner's security clearance.

Letter urging the Department of Education to protect transgender students by reversing the Department's position of not investigating restroom discrimination cases brought by transgender students.

MARK'S RECENT STATEMENTS

Representatives DeSaulnier, DeFazio, and Larsen Request GAO Study into Aviation Safety Incidents

"We are fortunate that our aviation system in this country is so safe that catastrophic accidents are few and far between. To ensure we maintain this high standard for safety, we need to learn everything we can from the kinds of near-miss incidents we've seen over the past several months, three of which occurred at SFO," said Representative Mark DeSaulnier. "This study is an important first step in ensuring the FAA is gathering information and addressing these safety concerns in the most effective way possible, and that it is adapting to new conditions and a changing aviation industry."
