Congressman DeSaulnier and Senator Feinstein React to MTC’s Analysis of a Second Bay Crossing

November 8, 2019

Walnut Creek, CA – Today, Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) and Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) issued the following statement in response to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission's (MTC) release of a report analyzing a second east-west crossing of the San Francisco Bay. DeSaulnier and Feinstein have been encouraging MTC to conduct this study since December 2017.

"Nationally, the Bay Area ranks second in the amount of time drivers spend stuck in traffic. This means lost productivity and less time with family and friends, as well as more pollution. The study released today answers some questions, but leaves many unanswered. We still need a more detailed look at specific corridors and big, bold ideas to address this oversized problem. We look forward to the next phase of MTC's work, where we will hopefully learn more about how we can significantly alleviate congestion in Bay Area corridors," said DeSaulnier and Feinstein.

Traffic on freeways in the Bay Area has increased by 80 percent since 2010, according to MTC's own analysis. DeSaulnier and Feinstein believe a "Southern Crossing" would do more than any other project to alleviate congestion in the region, resulting in moving people and goods more efficiently, harnessing the region's culture of innovation, and helping to maintain the quality of life that draws people and companies to the Bay Area.
