Congressman DeSaulnier Announces Las Lomas High School Junior as Congressional Art Competition Winner
Walnut Creek, CA – Today, Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) announced Las Lomas High School junior, Yoon-Ju Kim, as the winner of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition for California's 11th Congressional District. Her mixed media piece entitled "Trapped" utilizes charcoal on paper with a collage of fabrics and strings. Her entry will be sent to Washington, DC to be displayed in the United States Capitol.
"This year's Congressional Art Competition submissions showcased tremendous creativity from across our district. The level of talent on display in each piece is inspiring," said Congressman DeSaulnier. "Congratulations to Yoon-Ju Kim of Las Lomas High School for winning this year's competition. I look forward to seeing it displayed among art from across the country in the U.S. Capitol."
Head-Royce School junior Hannah Anderson earned runner-up honors for her piece "Avian Anomaly" and Monte Vista High School freshman Haoran Xia placed third for the piece "Old Man in the Snow." These pieces will be on display in Congressman DeSaulnier's Walnut Creek and Richmond offices.
A total of 51 works of art were submitted from 16 high schools throughout California's 11th Congressional District. A reception was held at Congressman DeSaulnier's Walnut Creek office and the winning pieces were selected by the following judges:
- Michelle Krup, DVC Art and Photography Department Instructor
- Rebecca Talley, Adjunct Professor Fine Arts & Graphic Communications
- John Finger, Finger Art & Design, Artist, and Gallery Owner
The winning piece from the 11th Congressional District, along with winning artwork from all 50 states, will be displayed in the United States Capitol Building for the next year. This summer, the winner and a guest are invited to Washington, DC for a national reception honoring winners from across the country. Since 1982, over 650,000 high school students from around the nation have participated in the Congressional Art Competition, which has allowed Members of Congress to acknowledge the artistic talents of their young constituents.
