Congressman DeSaulnier Passes Measure to Provide Mental Health Resources for Health Care and Social Service Workers

November 21, 2019
Press Release

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) passed an effort to provide information on available mental health resources, trauma, and related counseling to health care workers and social service workers who suffer workplace violence. The amendment was included in the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act (H.R. 1309), which passed the U.S. House by a vote of 251-to-158.

“Workplace violence has significant physical and emotional consequences,” Congressman DeSaulnier said. “With health care and social service workers being nearly five times as likely to suffer a serious workplace violence injury than workers in other sectors, we must address this problem quickly. To best protect the people who dedicate their lives to caring for us, we need to make sure we support their mental health as well as their physical health. The longer we wait, the more people are suffering.”

As a member of the state legislature, Congressman DeSaulnier played a key role in California’s passage of legislation that put safeguards in place to protect health care and social service workers affected by workplace violence. The amendment passed by the House would bring the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act more in line with California law.
