Following the near-miss incident at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in 2017 when an arriving Air Canada flight came dangerously close to landing on a taxiway occupied by four aircraft loaded with more than 1,000 passengers, I spent two years researching aviation and near-miss incidents in consultation with experts in the field in order to author the Safe Landings Act and other important aviation innovation measures to protect the flying public and ensure the United States remains a global leader in aviation.

Congressional Delegations (CODELs) are an opportunity for Members to travel outside of the districts they represent to meet with experts, see innovative projects, and build relationships with our allies. I was honored to join a CODEL last week to tour the ongoing recovery efforts from the August wildfires in Maui, discuss the United States' military presence in the Pacific, and connect with our allies in Japan.

Meanwhile, in the district, our office attended a number of community events.

When I came to Congress and until 2022, I was proud to represent the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historic Park in Richmond and during that time I led efforts to recognize the impact Rosies had both on the home front effort during World War II and on advancing the role of women in the workforce. Last week, one of those efforts came to fruition and Rosies were presented with the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony, which I spearheaded with former Representatives Jackie Speier and George Miller.

For the past two weeks, with the House in a District Work Period, I’ve had the opportunity to be out in our community, hearing directly from constituents at a town hall, on our Education Listening Tour, and in other meetings. I am excited to bring your perspectives back to Washington this week as House Democrats continue our efforts to support families and working Americans. Thank you to everyone who engaged with our office this week. Hearing from you is the most important part of my job!

Sincerely,

Mark DeSaulnier
Member of Congress
