We are now six days into a government shutdown brought on by Congressional Republicans’ refusal to work with Democrats to come up with a commonsense funding bill that would guard against exorbitant increases in Americans’ health care costs and protect spending from President Trump’s meddling.
Just over 24 hours out from a federal government shutdown, I am back in Washington, D.C. ready to pass a funding bill that keeps our government open and working for the American people while protecting them from devastating health care premium hikes. Unfortunately, House Republicans have decided to stay home and not return to work until next week, after the shutdown deadline has passed.

President Trump has taken another step towards authoritarianism. Despite a marked decrease in violent crime in Washington, D.C., Trump claimed a crime emergency and placed the D.C. police under federal control. He also ordered more than 2,000 armed National Guard troops to patrol the streets of our nation's capital. President Trump continues to threaten a broader authoritarian power grab of other major cities including San Francisco, Chicago, and New York by trying to control their independent law enforcement agencies.
